A Sydney woman named Carolyn has become the first person in Australia buried in a coffin formed from fungi. The Guardian and the Sydney Morning Herald reported the details on September 7.
The coffin is made from mycelium, the underlying network of fungi. It decomposes quickly and returns nutrients to the soil. People in the funeral industry say that more Australians are currently considering greener funeral options, instead of standard graves or cremation arrangements.
